Return of the Field of Flags – A Healing Experience
 

Once again, the Field of Honor and the Veteran’s Honorable Service Medal Presentations will be in Newport, April 29 through May 3, during the Loyalty Days celebration. The full field of 1000 national flags will be posted on Port of Newport property just west of the Hatfield Marine Science Center within view of the bridge. This presentation, in the form of a maze, provides a walkway that takes visitors by every flagpole in the field. The journey provides time to reflect on the honor the field contains, as well as time to visit spiritually with veterans who are no-longer with us.
 

In addition, the Veterans of Oregon will honor and recognize those who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. A custom-designed medal, registered by number and engraved with the veteran’s name may be presented during the planned ceremony at the Newport Armory. Any veteran who has served honorably in the Armed Forces is eligible to have their name forever recorded in Oregon’s traveling memorial and the first of this kind in the nation. Approximately three hundred of the sixteen hundred eligible Lincoln County veterans were awarded medals in Newport last year.
